Follow the Breather Leader: A Simple Game with Big Benefits

My yoga class today was *pure magic*. We played a new yoga game I called **Breather Leader**, and it was an absolute hit with my students. It had everything I love in a children’s yoga session—connection, movement, mindful breathing, laughter, and leadership.

Instructions:

  1. We started with a breathing circle,  and passed around the ever so popular, Hoberman sphere. Each student took a turn leading the class and would expand and contract the sphere slowly as the rest of us mirrored their
breath—inhale as it opened, exhale as it closed.
  2. Next, we added the yoga dice! Each “Breather Leader” rolled the dice and chose a yoga pose based on what came up.
  3. They then led the group with the yoga pose and by holding the Hoberman ball.  They then guided everyone through a three rounds of breath, by holding the pose and the breathing ball.
  4. The rest of the group mirrored both the breath and the pose, giving every child the chance to be both a leader and a mindful follower.
  5. Everyone in class got a turn!

And just like that, the room transformed. I watched the energy shift from wiggly to focused, from shy to confident, from scattered to *together*.

Why It Worked
The **Breather Leader Game** is a simple activity, but it taps into something really powerful. In just 15–20 minutes, it gave every child a chance to:

Practice Mindful Breathing
Using the Hoberman sphere as a visual anchor helped the students deepen their awareness of their inhale and exhale. It was tangible and calming—especially for my more active or anxious kiddos.

Build Leadership Skills
Every child had a moment in the spotlight. Being the Breather Leader meant making choices, speaking up, and guiding the group with confidence. For some, it was their first time doing that in a classroom setting.

Develop Mirror Neuron Awareness
By mirroring their peer’s breath and movement, students practiced focus, empathy, and body awareness. It’s subtle, but incredibly powerful for self-regulation and connection.

Strengthen Group Connection
The kids cheered each other on, giggled through their favorite poses, and stayed so *present* with one another. It turned into a true community moment—no screens, no pressure, just play and presence.

Enjoy Yoga in a Playful Way
Sometimes the best yoga moments are the ones that *don’t feel like yoga class*.

If you’re looking for a fresh way to bring mindfulness, movement, and leadership into your class, give “Follow the Breather Leader” a try.
