My Journey

Hi, I’m Shannon.

I’m a wife, a mom of three, a certified yoga instructor, and a former CPA. I’m deeply passionate about helping children, parents, and people of all ages and abilities feel safe, grounded, and connected in their bodies.

Grow with OM exists because of my why.

In 2008, my life changed in an instant after a traumatic brain injury

I was in a car accident and lost consciousness. When I woke up, I couldn’t speak. At the hospital, I was unable to write my own name — I drew a line instead of a signature. I remember wanting to scream, “I can’t write my name,” but no words or tears came out.

The weeks and months that followed were disorienting and overwhelming. I lived with migraines, nausea, memory loss, sensory overload, and a profound difficulty finding words or expressing emotion. My days were filled with Post-it notes everywhere — reminders to eat, brush my teeth, and care for myself. I watched the same television episodes on repeat because my short-term memory couldn’t hold onto the ending.

I committed myself fully to recovery through brain trauma rehabilitation — vestibular therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and psychotherapy — doing everything I could to heal.

Then one of my doctors suggested yoga.

At the time, I was skeptical. I couldn’t imagine how someone who struggled to walk could possibly balance in a yoga class. But I was determined to reclaim my life, so I tried.

That first class changed everything.

The instructor met me exactly where I was. She placed my mat near a wall and gently reminded me to listen to my body — “You’ll know.” And she was right.

I couldn’t move the way I wanted to, but I was moving. I was breathing. For the first time since my injury, I felt present, powerful, and safe in my body. I held the wall when my balance failed and let go of the expectations that told me I wasn’t enough.

And when I lay down in Savasana, something remarkable happened.

I cried.

Yoga helped reconnect my brain and body in a way nothing else had. This experience became the foundation of my traumatic brain injury yoga recovery. It created space for regulation, trust, and healing. It taught me that growth doesn’t come from force — it comes from presence.

Years later, as programs like LoveYourBrain Yoga began to emerge, I recognized my own experience reflected back to me. Seeing yoga formally acknowledged as a support for traumatic brain injury recovery affirmed what I had felt intuitively — that reconnecting the brain and body through breath and movement can be deeply healing.

Since beginning my practice in 2009, yoga has supported me through the long-term effects of a traumatic brain injury, pregnancy and motherhood, and the everyday demands of life. As I became a parent, I watched these tools support not only my own healing, but my children’s ability to regulate, reset, and grow. In 2018, I followed a calling I had felt for years and became a yoga instructor.

Today, I teach yoga and mindfulness as practical tools for nervous system regulation, shaped by my own recovery and inspired by raising three children with different needs, temperaments, and strengths. I believe these are lifelong skills — ones that empower children, support resilience, and help people feel at home in themselves.

Everyone deserves to feel peaceful, present, and powerful in their own body.
