One of the training modules I completed during my children’s teacher yoga training was all about children’s yoga books. It emphasized the importance of using books as a way to connect with your students. The benefits of books are endless and provide your students a way to build language skills, learn about a concept that may be new to them, develop empathy and emotional awareness.
I love connecting with my students with books and loved pulling this list together. Below are some of my favorites that I have used over the years. Note that majority of these books work well for preschoolers and elementary aged children.
Books that introduce yoga to children
- “I AM YOGA” by Susan Verde, illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds
- “Good Morning Yoga” by Mariam Gates, illustrated by Sarah Jane Hinder
- “Breathe Like a Bear” – by Kira Willey
The best yoga books for bedtime
- “Goodnight Yoga” by Diane Kovanda and Adam Gamble, illustrated by Katherine Blackmore
- “Good Night Yoga: A Pose by Pose Bedtime Story” by Mariam Gates, illustrated by Sarah Jane Hinder
- “Yawning Yoga” by Laurie Jordan, illustrated by Diana Mayo
Children’s yoga books that involve animals
Everyone loves pretending to be an animal in yoga class! We slither like snakes, roar like lions, and balance like flamingos. Below are the most well loved children’s yoga books about animals. These are perfect for preschoolers and younger elementary students (think: 2nd grade or younger!).
- “Zoo Zen, A Yoga Story for Kids” by Kristen Fischer, illustrated by Susie Schaefer
- “The Grateful Giraffe: A Kids Yoga Feelings Book” by Giselle Shardlow, illustrated by Valerie Bouthyette
- “You are a LION! And Other Fun Yoga Poses” by Taeeun Yoo
- “I am the Jungle: A Yoga Adventure” by Melissa Hurt, illustrated by Katy Tania
These are just a handful of my favorite yoga books. I have used these books in my house with my own kids and while teaching yoga classes. What are your favorite books to use your in your classes? At home with your own kids?
