Ah, sweet, sweet Savasana! Savasana is the final resting pose in yoga – an opportunity for all and every to spend their last few minutes in a yoga class in “corpse” pose – laying on their back on their yoga mat. This pose is done to give rest to the mind and body.
Savasana can be a challenging pose for kids (& adults!) but I have found over the years the right props and songs can make a huge difference. I also shorten Savasana when I first begin working with a group of students because anything longer than two minutes (depending on the age) can become incredible challenging for wiggly students. Below are some of my favorite songs that I have used over the years.
Just Be by Kira Willey
This song is an instant crowd pleaser and is always a favorite with my students.. It’s also my number one song played on Spotify for three years in a row. At one school, it was requested and played on repeat for almost an entire year. My students did not like it when I played any other songs for Savasana. I have parents message me asking me the name of it so they can play it at home before bed time. The song lyrics speak for themselves and children quickly settle to rest once they hear her voice.
Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole
This song is always a hit with my classes too – from preschool to elementary and even up to high school. The lyrics are familiar and I often find that the children want to share memories (after Savasana) about when they hear the song and why they like it.
You are my Sunshine by Christina Perri
This was on my Savasana songs on repeat this past Spring. Yesterday in class my preschoolers actually started whispering the lyrics and their sweet little singing voices warmed my heart. Similar to Somewhere Over the Rainbow, my students are generally familiar with this song and will quickly settle into Savasana once it starts. I’ve played instrumental versions for older students. This version by Christina Perri is one of my favorites.
Rainbow by Kacey Musgraves
This song is a bittersweet Savasana song for me. It reminds me of the Covid pandemic and the positivity that surrounded the unknown during that time. My students know it as the rainbow song and it’s the perfect compliment to a class about the weather, rainbows, or getting back up again after we fall. I’ve used this song for Savasana for all ages.
It’s a Big World by Renee and Jeremy
I use this song with my preschoolers. It’s a sweet little song about being small in a big world. It’s a little over three minutes long so it’s the perfect Savasana song for the littlest yogis who have a hard time being still. Sometimes I even pair it with a breathing buddy or rubber duckies on their belly, to encourage slow and controlled breathing.
Do you use any of these songs in Savasana? What songs do your little yogis love?
