October has to be one of my favorite months to teach yoga because I can incorporate Halloween yoga into all of my classes. I have so many games and props that the kids love and I typically theme at least two to three classes in October around Halloween. Below are some of my students’ favorite activities and themes:

Mr. Bones makes an appearance and we practice naming our different body parts. Then we move on to dancing and wiggling our bones to the song, “Shake them Skeleton Bones” by the Kiboomers.
Spider Toe-Ga – these spiders are used for Toe-Ga and we use Halloween straws to practice making the spiders move!

Balancing Bats – I have these small, plastic bats and love giving children descriptions about the “surprise” prop I have for us to use in class. The bats are similar to these on Amazon. The children are always so excited to share that the bats sleep upside down! We then practice sleeping like bats by laying on our backs with our feet up in the air. and encourage the children to sleep like bats. If they are able to keep their legs together I place a bat on top of their feet. This takes some serious core strength!
We then move on to a “spider crawl” and push up to reverse tabletop and try to balance the bat on our bellies!
One of my favorite things to do is yoga to “Five Little Pumpkins Sitting on a Gate.” I’ve done this every year for the past five years. By the end of the song the children have practiced a full yoga flow! I incorporate the following poses with the verses:
- 5 Pumpkins Sit on a Gate -> Pose as if sitting on a chair
- 1st one: “It’s getting late.” -> Pretend to check the time
- 2nd one: “Witches in the air,” -> Airplane Pose
- 3rd one: “We don’t care,” -> Shake head while standing
- 4th one: “Run and run and run,” -> Run in place or do bicycle legs
- 5th one: “Ready for fun” -> Jump up and down like pumpkins
- Roll like “Pumpkins” -> Child’s Pose
I would love to hear your ideas and what you do to celebrate Halloween in your classes!!
Happy Halloween!!!
